No Turning Back
So, here we are, John and I, in sunny Berkeley, CA, with John's sister and brother-in-law. The weather out here is a kind of perfect that seems like it shouldn't be allowed. It actually makes me wonder why humans ever settled in unpleasant places. You'd think there would have been more weather nomads who wouldn't settle before they found something like this.
But apart from comparing Berkeley's 77 outside to Memphis/Jackson/Birmingham's 97, we've found plenty to do out here and an abundance of beauty in this bit of creation that also begs the question that Californians seem to ask often of people on their way out: "Why would you ever leave?"
Until last night our friends Jamie and Patrick were in from Birmingham and joined us for a quick tour through Berkeley and fun and tasty (though also interesting) Korean BBQ in the city (with Ryan and Kara, too!). Yesterday (Friday) we went out to Napa Valley where we were treated to an incredible wine tour and tasting by Jamie's landlord (small world, yeah?). Nothing like sitting in the lap of luxury before we head to the much more real worlds of Malaysia and East Africa. What contrast.
And then today was a big day for me. I was formally introduced to the great Pacific Ocean and all it's ridiculously cold glory. For a couple of guys used to white-sand, steaming-hot Destin, the Pacific was a new kind of beach experience where instead of getting into the water every now and then to cool off, we were running out of the water very quickly to avoid hypothermia. It was awesome.
Tomorrow's our last day in CA, and then Monday begins our long journey to Malaysia and the next friend on this six-week friend-surfing venture, Candis, who's excitement to see some folks visit her in her own habitat may be contagious over the entire continent. We're pumped.
So pray for us, for safety, for diligence in the Word, for eyes to see the beauty in this world that we can't escape because it is surrounded, watched over, and renewed by the author and standard of beauty himself. Thanks for reading, friends and family, and we'll try to shout back often.
Peace!
